Iraqi police conducted a large-scale anti-corruption operation, during which, according to media reports, assets of extraordinary value were discovered in the apartment of MP Hind Al Abbasi.
According to published information, during the search of her apartment, 57 million US dollars in cash and 27 kilograms of pure gold were seized. Reports also mention that among the items found were gold-plated underwear, although it is not clear whether they are included in the official inventory of seized items. Judicial authorities are continuing their investigations and have expanded their scope.
The operation led to the arrest of a total of 47 suspects, including members of parliament and senior state administration officials. Security forces carried out coordinated raids in the early hours of Sunday in several areas of the country, with a focus mainly on Baghdad.
Hind Al Abbas's name continues to appear on the official website of the Iraqi Parliament, while authorities have not yet officially confirmed in detail the list of seized items reported by the media.
The operation is being conducted under the leadership of the government of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, who has declared that there will be zero tolerance for the abuse of public funds.
In a separate case, Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council announced that during the investigation of a former deputy oil minister, approximately $10 million, 3 billion Iraqi dinars, valuables, heavy weapons and 40 pieces of real estate were seized. Sources close to the investigation say that the evidence collected could lead to a new wave of interrogations in the coming days.
