Charlie Mullins is a 71-year-old British man. But now everyone knows him as the richest plumber in Britain.

At the age of 71, he sold "Pimlico Plumber" for 140 million euros, the company he founded almost 5 decades ago from nothing.

"I think I have spent about 100 million pounds (about 120 million euros) in my life, I say that without any problem. I'm glad I did, I would never want to be the richest man in the cemetery. People say you can't spend that much money, but I did. I've made investments but mostly I've lived a good life," he tells The Sun.

But how did Mullins get started?

After leaving school at the age of 15, his mentor Bill taught him everything from commerce to respect for customers:

"I remember one job in particular. A pipe had burst in a luxury house in Hampstead or Primrose Hill, Billy and I repaired the leak in no time. It wasn't a big deal, but the people there idolized Bill because he presented himself the right way. They gave him advice, dinner and said, 'Oh, we're so grateful you came,'” Mullins says.

And in this case he also received the first valuable lesson from his mentor.

“I remember that day Bill told me that he would make more money fixing that old pipe than my father made in a week at the factory. He wasn't saying this to belittle my family, but simply to explain how it works. I could earn £10 a week in the factory or do the same with just one job," Mullins continues.

Aged just 25, Mullins founded Pimlico Plumbers: “I always say that our success didn't come from doing something complicated, it wasn't that at Pimlico Plumbers we were so good, it was that everyone else was so incompetent (…) Industry plumbing had a terrible reputation and I decided to change that," he says.

Over the years, Mullins had received numerous offers to sell his 90% stake in Pimlico Plumbers, but it was only after the pandemic that he felt the time was finally right to sell.

"I didn't want to leave Pimlico in a coffin and I realized that taking a huge amount of money for a company I had started from nothing was the final act."
