Americans who talk to artificial intelligence (AI) every day face significantly higher rates of depression than casual users, according to a study published Wednesday.
“Higher levels of AI use were associated with modest increases in depressive symptoms,” the researchers wrote in JAMA Network Open, noting that the odds of at least moderate depression increased by 30 percent among daily users.
The survey of 20,847 American adults conducted between April and May 2025 found that 10.3 percent reported daily use of AI, including 5.3 percent who turned to chatbots multiple times during their day.
Younger users seemed particularly vulnerable to mental health effects, although it is not clear whether AI causes depression or whether depressed individuals simply seek out more digital interaction.
The researchers emphasized that further investigation is required to determine whether the relationship is causal and to explain why the effects differ between different age groups.
