A user of an event trading platform (known as "prediction markets") has attracted international media attention after placing a bet of over $30,000 that Nicolás Maduro would leave power, just one day before the US military operation in Venezuela.

According to reports from the Wall Street Journal and Axios, the user placed a bet that Maduro would no longer be President of Venezuela by January 31, 2026. His account was created less than a week ago and, according to cited sources, he profited over $430,000 after his prediction proved correct after the major American intervention that led to Maduro's overthrow and arrest.

This episode has sparked heated discussions about the possibility of using inside information in markets related to geopolitical developments. Some analysts are questioning whether this person had access to confidential data on US military plans or simply made a risky but successful prediction.

So-called “event traders” are individuals who speculate on the outcomes of political, economic or military events, including elections, diplomatic crises or changes in power. Although these platforms operate in unclear legal terrain in many countries, the use of inside information for financial gain remains prohibited in most Western jurisdictions.

Authorities have not yet announced whether they will investigate the case. But market observers say the precedent could prompt greater scrutiny of the combination of state intelligence and digital prediction markets, especially in tense international contexts.
