Four young men have been arrested by Taliban authorities in Afghanistan for walking in public dressed as characters from the popular British series "Peaky Blinders," with authorities saying they were "promoting foreign culture."
According to the Taliban's Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Immoral Behavior, the four 30-year-old men were located in the Jibril district of Herat province, where they had become known for their appearances inspired by the series.
Ministry spokesman Saif ur-Islam Khyber said the youths were “called up and enrolled in a ‘reform’ program” because, he said, they were “imitating characters from foreign films and promoting non-Afghan models.”
"We are Muslims and Afghans, we have our own religion, culture and values," Khyber said in a post on social media, stressing that the country has been "protected with sacrifices from harmful cultural influences."
In a later statement to CBS News, he claimed that the four men were “not formally arrested” but “interrogated and then released.” He said that “the clothes they were wearing do not have an Afghan identity and are not in line with the Muslim character of the society.”
