"I feel more vulnerable now, much more emotional. I've never cried so much in my life," says Laura Woods, in a story that reveals the threats she has faced.
The well-known presenter also talks about tears of happiness, the joy she gets from relieving stress, but also the anger of critics.
The popular sportscaster, labeled the golden girl, has had to acquire what she calls an "iron exterior," protecting herself from the misogyny that has crept in because of her success, her looks, or her tendency in public opinion to go where others fear to tread. But now her solution is to detach, both physically and psychologically, from the anger.
It's not just that she's traded the toxicity of social media for healthier distractions, learning how to raise chickens. She's moved away from the often oppressive life in London to a farm just outside Newcastle.
The decision was not one she made lightly. It came against the backdrop of a difficult four-year ordeal that included a miscarriage, the malicious obsessions of a female stalker, and a backlash for their courage in defending biological reality when two boxers with male chromosomes won gold medals in women's boxing at the Paris Olympics. So monstrous was the abuse that Woods, while pregnant with Leon, endured death threats against her unborn child.
It's just a few weeks before she's back in the spotlight after collapsing during a live broadcast while covering a friendly match for ITV. It's an alarming incident, requiring co-presenters Ian Wright and Anita Asante to stop her fall before she can be treated by pitchside paramedics. She later reveals that the "strange" experience, which left her "very embarrassed", was most likely the result of a virus.
A return to the country's screens, for Manchester City's trip to Real Madrid, is imminent.
Since she became the unwitting victim of a poisonous attack, she has not felt ready to express her views on the subject.
"As you get older, I think the filter wears off a little bit. One week people will think what you said is fantastic, then the next week they'll demonize you. It always comes in waves. It depends on how big that wave is," she says.

Ajo kishte dashur të fliste shumë më herët. Përpara se të bëhej fytyra e mbulimit të Ligës së Kampionëve të TNT Sports në vitin 2023, ose të drejtonte Lojërat Olimpike për Discovery+ vitin e kaluar, ajo ishte një prezantuese e njohur e emisionit të mëngjesit në TalkSport.
Kur Piers Morgan dikur sugjeroi që Erik ten Hag, ish-trajneri i Manchester United, duhet t'i lutej Cristiano Ronaldos për falje i ulur në gjunjë, ajo iu përgjigj: "do të duhet t'i shpjegojmë atij se kush je ti më parë."

Pse i kritikojmë kaq ashpër mashtrimet me drogën, por e anashkalojmë çështjen e seksit në sport?"
Për shkak se e ngriti këtë enigmë në gusht të vitit 2024, Woods u kritikua ashpër. Një gazetare e re sportive e quajti atë një “kurvë”.
Woods has not forgotten the personal animosity against her. While I have encountered much discomfort in reporting on this subject, she faced far worse simply because she was a woman. Such is the deep-seated hatred of women inherent in so many supposed transgender alliances.
"I saw what people in my industry were saying about me, very derogatory messages. I thought, 'I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they're at an earlier stage in their career than I am now.' But I look back and ask myself, 'When I was younger, would I have accepted the weight of the crowd?' And I don't think I would have ever singled anyone out like that. Some of these people have been sending me private messages since then, supporting me with things about my child. But don't forget."
As hurt by the insults as she is, Woods has had far more experience than she would like with obsessive harassment. Her first exposure came during her radio job, when a man desperate for her attention would send her messy messages and letters in all caps, eventually recording a bomb threat at TalkSport’s headquarters on London’s South Bank. The worry turned to horror when, in the summer of 2021, she began to be inundated with threats from a young Liverpool fan who created multiple profiles to attack her and even sent her home with test kits for sexually transmitted infections.
Last June, Harneet Kaur was jailed for 14 months and given a restraining order, banning her from coming within 500 metres of Woods' property. It marks the first time Woods, who did not attend Kaur's sentencing, has spoken out about what she endured. "For three years, she did everything she could to make my life very unpleasant. There were birthday cards that said, 'Today is the day you were born and tonight is the night you will die.' I got funeral cards every month."
