Former Premier League player Ramadan Sobhi has been sentenced to a year in prison and hard labour after being found guilty of cheating in exams in Egypt.
Sobhi, 28, who has played for Stoke City and Huddersfield, had scored three goals in 46 appearances for Stoke before the Terriers paid £5.7m for him in 2018. The midfielder then returned to Al Ahli in Egypt and won the African Champions League with Piramids FC last season.
During the trial in Giza, it was revealed that Sobhi had paid another person to take the tourism and hospitality exams instead of him. According to reports in De Telegraaf, the judge sentenced him and another suspect to 12 months in prison and hard labor.
Sobhi's lawyer is expected to appeal the decision, while the former midfielder also faces a four-year ban from football after failing an anti-doping test in 2024, a decision confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in November.
Sobhi, who has played a total of 37 games for the Egyptian national team and scored two goals, has had a complicated career in England, failing to leave a big mark on the Terriers.
