Former Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos has undergone emergency surgery after being diagnosed with a heart problem, media reports say.
The 52-year-old was on holiday in Brazil with his wife and one of his children when he was taken to hospital. Carlos was in his homeland after a busy month, attending the World Cup draw in the United States.
According to Spanish newspaper AS , Roberto Carlos was initially taken to hospital due to a small blood clot in his leg. After a full body scan (MRI), doctors discovered a heart problem that required immediate intervention.
The emergency surgery involved the placement of a tube, and despite being scheduled to last 40 minutes, the procedure ended after almost three hours due to a complication.
Sources close to him report that Carlos is doing well after the surgery, however he will remain under medical supervision for 48 hours as a precautionary measure.
The former player himself, winner of the World Cup with Brazil in 2002, told "AS" through his team: " Now I'm fine ."
