Ukraine have been eliminated from the 2026 World Cup play-offs after being beaten 3-1 by Sweden in a match they were considered favourites to secure a place in the grand final. The defeat has disappointed the team and fans, leaving the Ukrainians out of the competition.
Following this result, Ukraine will face Albania, a team that also lost in the other semi-final of the group, in a friendly match. A match that is seen more as an opportunity for reaction than as a sporting objective.
Midfielder Grigori Sudakov, one of the team's key players, openly expressed disappointment over the performance against Sweden.
" It's hard to find words. I, like Mikolenko, feel ashamed of this match. Not a little, but deeply ashamed in front of the whole nation ," he declared.
According to Sudakov, the loss came as a result of a series of mistakes in all aspects of the game.
" There were many mistakes, both in the collective and individual and tactical aspects. We conceded easy goals and after the 0-2 result it became very difficult to come back. Giokeres is a high-level player and took advantage of all the opportunities he had. We also created chances, but we failed to materialize them ," he added.
Speaking about the upcoming match against Albania, Sudakov emphasized that motivation remains high, despite the friendly nature of the challenge.
" Playing for the national team is a privilege and a childhood dream. Even though it's a friendly, we want to win and recover a little from the mistakes we made against Sweden. We want to play for our country ," the midfielder concluded.
