Thomas Tuchel has signed a contract extension with the England national team, ensuring his stay in charge until after the 2028 European Championship. The new deal guarantees the German coach's continuity beyond this summer's World Cup, regardless of England's result at that tournament.
Tuchel took over as England manager in January 2025, following the departure of Gareth Southgate. He had initially signed an 18-month contract, but the new deal will see him take charge of the team through Euro 2028, a tournament that England will co-host with Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.
Aiming for stability before "Euro 2028"
According to sources close to the English Football Association (FA), the leaders were seeking to ensure technical continuity ahead of a major event like Euro 2028, avoiding speculation about a possible departure of Tuchel to elite clubs.
The coach himself described leading England in a home tournament as a unique opportunity.
" I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England. It is no secret that I have enjoyed every minute of working with the players and staff. I can't wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity and we will do our best to make the country proud ," said Tuchel.
He also highlighted the support received from FA leaders and fans. " Euro 2028 will be a very special tournament and as a coach there is nothing greater than competing with the best on the biggest stage ," he added.
Positive balance in the direction
Since taking charge, the former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain boss has recorded impressive results with England. The team has won all eight of their World Cup qualifying matches without conceding a single goal. Their only defeat under his leadership came in a friendly against Senegal in June last year.
Tuchel's technical staff – Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilário, Nico Mayer and James Melbourne – have also signed new contracts until the summer of 2028.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said securing the contracts early avoids distractions ahead of the tournament. " By securing them early for 2028, we have eliminated any risk of renegotiations creating uncertainty around the tournament, " he said.
Bullingham praised the German coach, describing him as the best possible choice. "There is no better candidate in world football. With his experience, knowledge and passion for the big games, he gives the team the best chance of success," the FA chief said.
