South Korea's elimination in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup has caused strong reactions in the country, placing former coach Hong Myung-bo at the center of public criticism.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung called the team's performance unacceptable, blaming the failure on a lack of organization and leadership. The head of state ordered an investigation by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to examine the team's management and the use of public funds earmarked for the tournament. He also apologized to fans for the disappointing result.
After returning to the country, the national team delegation attempted to avoid fan reactions by arriving at night, but at the airport they were faced with protests and opposing calls from hundreds of people gathered.
Meanwhile, South Korean authorities have increased security measures for Hong Myung-bo, following a threat posted online. According to reports, a 41-year-old man living in the United States threatened to kill the coach as soon as he arrived at Incheon airport. For this reason, police have placed additional security measures on the former coach, while the case is being investigated by the relevant authorities.
