England booked their place in the last 16 of the World Cup after beating the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. They will next face Mexico.
However, the match started with a surprise. Congo took the lead in the 7th minute, when Brian Cipenga took advantage of a long ball from Chancel Mbemba and a mistake in the English defense, beating goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for 1-0.
England reacted immediately and took control of the game. Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford created several dangerous chances, but the Congolese goalkeeper and defense resisted, causing the first half to end with the Africans' minimal lead.
After the break, the English team significantly increased the pace and moved the game into the opposition half. Rashford came close to scoring, but his attempt ended up in the outside of the net.
The equalizer came in the 75th minute. Declan Rice sent a long ball into the box, Anthony Gordon crossed accurately and Harry Kane headed in to restore parity.
When it looked like the game was heading for extra time, England struck again. In the 86th minute, after a well-constructed move and a second assist from Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane finished with a precise right-footed shot, sealing the upset and a 2-1 victory.
The English striker's brace was also a personal record, as Kane scored his 84th goal for the national team in 118 appearances.
With this victory, England continues their journey in the World Cup and will challenge Mexico in the round of 16, while Congo is eliminated from the tournament after a dignified performance.
