The Milan prosecutor's office has requested the archiving of investigations against Gianluca Roki, the former referee designer in Serie A, who was under investigation for suspicions of possible involvement in favoring Inter through the appointment of referees.
After nearly two years of investigation, prosecutors have concluded that there is no evidence of an organized system of manipulation or influence in the selection of referees. The files have now been sent to the sports justice and the CONI General Prosecutor's Office for further evaluation regarding any possible irregularities.
The investigation also focused on Roki's so-called "knocks" in the VAR room in Lisone, where he intervened during several controversial episodes of matches. One of the challenges included in the investigation was last season's Torino-Inter.
Roki's lawyer, Antonio D'Aviro, has reacted to the decision of the Milan Prosecutor's Office, expressing satisfaction with the development of the case and defending his client's actions.
" I spoke to him and he is very happy. Now we will evaluate what we will do. Fortunately, everything was resolved in a short time, although the price that Roki had to pay was heavy. When this issue broke out, there was more talk about him than about Trump ," the lawyer stated.
D'Aviro emphasized that during questioning, Roki had provided full explanations and denied any outside influence in the process of appointing arbitrators.
" After questioning Roki about ten days ago, I made a positive impression, because he accurately responded to all the allegations raised against him and argued them. He testified that decisions on the appointment of arbitrators have always been made in full autonomy and that he has never been influenced by anyone ," he said.
Regarding VAR interference, the lawyer rejected the idea that it could be considered sports fraud.
“I don’t see how the ‘knocks’ could constitute sports fraud. They were intended to correct a serious mistake made by the referee and not to change the result of the match. From a legal point of view, I don’t see how a claim for sports fraud could be raised ,” D’Aviro said.
According to the notes of the Milan prosecutor, Marcello Viola, the request to archive the case shows that individual episodes of alleged interference were analyzed, but no structured system was found to influence the appointment of arbitrators.
" There are individual historical episodes of alleged interference, but it does not appear that there is an organized system to interfere in the appointment of match referees ," the Milan Prosecutor's Office said in the documents.
The prosecution has also requested the archiving of the investigations for Inter, which was only recently included in the list of persons under investigation. Initially, the suspicions linked Roki to an allegation that he had influenced the appointment of referees in collaboration with people from the black and blue club, but without specifically identifying any such individual or mechanism.
