Referees continue to be at the center of debate at the 2026 World Cup, due to several disputed decisions by both on-field referees and VAR officials. This time, the controversy has erupted before the match even starts.
The reason is FIFA's decision to entrust the first quarter-final of the World Cup between France and Morocco to a refereeing team entirely from Argentina. Facundo Tello will be the main referee, while his two assistants, the fourth official and the VAR referee, will also be Argentines.
This is the first time during this World Cup that almost the entire refereeing body for a match consists of representatives from the same country. In all the challenges held so far, FIFA had chosen that only the main referee and the two assistants were from the same nationality, while the fourth official and the VAR came from other countries.
The latest decision by the world football governing body has not been well received in France, especially given the fact that the referees are from Argentina, one of the great rivals and a potential opponent of the "Roosters" on their way to winning the World Cup.
According to "RMC Sport", this decision is further evidence of FIFA's inappropriate conduct. Other French media outlets have also reacted in the same vein, while the news was received more calmly in the French national team camp, despite the bad experience with the refereeing in the round of 16 match against Paraguay.
