Croatian President Zoran Milanovic commented on international developments during the NATO summit in Ankara, speaking about Donald Trump, the war in Ukraine and the role that, in his opinion, Croatia should have within the Alliance.
Referring to US President Donald Trump, Milanovic said that he has been more direct than other leaders in the way he represents the interests of the United States.
"In this format, Donald Trump was the most honest. He comes here as a fully established arms dealer and in that sense represents interests. He speaks respectfully of Putin and Xi, and they of him. Other leaders speak with a different rhetoric," the Croatian president said.
Milanovic stressed that Croatia will continue to respect its commitments to NATO, but will make decisions with the national interest in mind.
"Croatia has paid many bills for others throughout history and has sometimes made miscalculations for itself. Now we must take advantage of the position we have, because Croatia's position is good ," he said.
The Croatian president also announced that Zagreb is not part of the so-called "Coalition of the Willing," stressing that a Western military presence in Ukraine would be extremely dangerous.
"The Western presence in Ukraine is very dangerous and unsafe. That is why we cannot be there ," the Croatian president declared.
Milanovic also touched on new security challenges, saying that NATO must prepare for technological threats, including hypersonic missiles and modern weapons systems. According to him, the priority remains the protection of Croatia's interests and security within the Alliance.
