Guardiola's departure from the Citizens is considered the end of one of the most successful periods in the English club's history. Immediately after the decision was confirmed, Italian media reported a possible interest from the Italian Football Federation in the Catalan coach.
According to LaPresse, sources close to Guardiola have revealed that the coach is willing to consider the possibility of managing Italy in the future. Such an appointment would mark his return to Italian football, where he previously played with Roma and Brescia.
However, the situation in the Italian Federation still remains unclear. The FIGC will elect a new president on June 22nd and only after this process is it expected that work on the appointment of the next coach of the "Azzurri" will begin concretely.
Following the departure of Gennaro Gattuso and several members of the technical staff, the temporary management of the Italian national team has been entrusted to U-21 coach Silvio Baldini. He will lead the team in friendlies against Greece and Luxembourg.
Financial obstacles
One of the main difficulties for a possible agreement between Guardiola and Italy remains the economic aspect. At Manchester City, the Spanish coach earned around 28 million euros per season, not counting bonuses and the costs of the technical staff.
The Italian Federation is unable to offer a similar financial contract, which means that any eventual negotiations would be based primarily on the sporting project and the ambition to return Italy to the highest levels of international football.
Guardiola wants a break
In the press conference before the final match of the Premier League season against Aston Villa, Guardiola hinted that after leaving City he wants to stay away from football for a period of time.
" Now I need a break. I won't be a coach for a certain period. I have 17 or 18 years at the highest level, with pressure every three days to win everything. I need to stop a little, take a breath and relax ," he declared.
However, the coach's statement does not rule out the possibility of a return to the bench in the future, while the Italian national team track remains an open option.
