With two days left until the start of the Winter Olympic Games, the Italian government has made public the plan of security measures that will accompany the development of this international event.
Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, through a post on social media, has provided details on the engagement of security forces. According to him, 170 vehicles, radars, aircraft and drones, as well as 1,928 military personnel and around 2,000 carabinieri will be on the ground to guarantee public order.
In total, about 4,000 troops will be deployed for the security of the Games, while the number increases to nearly 6,000 people if the State Police, local and foreign forces, firefighters, civil defense workers and other specialized structures are included.
According to Italian authorities, the objective of this operation is to prevent problems with public order, especially in relation to possible protests, following the riots previously noted in Turin and the announced opposition to the presence of American agents of ICE, the US federal agency for borders and immigration.
Security forces' readiness begins this Thursday and Friday, on the occasion of the arrival of the Olympic Flame in Milan, for the opening ceremony that will take place at the "Meazza" stadium, where over 50 heads of state, governments and sovereigns are expected to participate.
The president of the Milano-Cortina Foundation and CONI, Giovanni Malagò, has spoken out about concerns about possible mobilizations or marches, saying that so far the situation has been calm. "There has never been an edition of the Olympic Games where protests and controversies have been so minimized," he declared.
The security plan also includes anti-hacking teams, police snipers and an increased presence at all Olympic venues, including those in the Alps. According to authorities, these measures are also aimed at protecting athletes, including LGBTQ+ athletes, during their stay in Italy for the Winter Olympics.
