Mikel Arteta says he is convinced that former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka has the qualities to become a "great coach" in the future. However, the Spanish coach admits that the current Sunderland midfielder is still far from the end of his playing career.
Since joining Sunderland in July this summer after two years at Bayer Leverkusen, Xhaka has played every minute of the season for his new side. Arteta, who approved Xhaka's departure after seven seasons at Arsenal in 2023, spoke warmly of his former player.
Arteta had Granit Xhaka as his opponent last weekend in the 2-2 draw between the two sides in the Premier League. The Gunners boss said the midfielder began his coaching career while he was still at the Emirates. " I think Ethan Nuaneri was one of them that he coached at that time ," said Arteta.
" I liked it because it means that, I'm sure if he wants it, he will become a great coach one day. And many others who have started their licenses while we are here, because they feel inspired, they love it and they also see an opportunity to improve their lives after they retire ," said Arteta.
" It will depend on what Granit decides. It's not for me, but I think he's a very good coach already on the pitch. But for now let's let him play. He's playing every minute of every game, so I think he still has a long career ahead of him ," Arteta said.
