Cape Verde goalkeeper

Making his World Cup debut at the age of 40, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha delivered a performance to remember.

With seven crucial saves, he helped Cape Verde draw 0-0 with tournament favourites Spain, earning his nation a historic point. It was the highlight of the veteran goalkeeper's career.

Much of his time has been spent at smaller clubs around the globe, with spells in Angola, Moldova, Cyprus and Slovakia a career defined by constant moves before his breakthrough at the World Cup.

He is currently with Portuguese team Chaves, which competes in the country's second division. Vozinha is a nickname that Josimar Jose Evora Dias has had since childhood.

The name carries a meaning in Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole, roughly translating to “little grandmother” – a nod to the close bond he had with his grandparents, who helped raise him while his parents were often away working. The name eventually followed him throughout his career, becoming the identity by which he is now known on the international stage.

After the match against Spain, Vozinha could not hold back her tears as emotions erupted. "I'm crying because I grew up with my grandparents and they're not here... they passed away a few years ago," Vozinha initially said.

"Even my mom wasn't here today. My mom had problems with the visa and money to travel, but I'm very happy today for all the people from Cape Verde," the goalkeeper concluded.

After Cape Verde's draw with Spain, goalkeeper Vozinha has now reached 5.7 million followers on Instagram from 50,000 before the match, with this figure continuing to grow, becoming one of the sensations of this early World Cup. /Telegraph
