Nuhaila Benzina made history at the World Cup by becoming the first woman to play in the headscarf, the Islamic garment some women wear for their faith and religion.
The Moroccan international came into her side's second group stage match in place of Jasmin Mrabet at the center of the African side's defense against South Korea. Her decision, yes, has caused a lot of controversy because of the meaning that the West gives to the hijab.
In this way, it becomes a historical fact, since before this World Cup, FIFA had banned the use of the hijab in its tournaments. Benzina is the only footballer who wears it both in training and in matches, and she did not hesitate to distinguish the importance of clothing in her thoughts: "I am very proud to wear the hijab", she admitted not long ago in Al Jazzera.
Morocco achieved, with Benzina on the field, a very important, even historic victory in an attempt to continue in the World Cup and pass a round. Morocco won 1-0 against South Korea and with the three points won they will play for the second place in group 'H' with Colombia on the last day.
