Germany ended their World Cup campaign in a disappointing manner after a disappointing performance throughout the tournament. According to German football legend Lothar Mateusz, the poor results were not only due to what happened on the pitch, but also to the situations created off it.
In an interview with "Bild", Mateus revealed that during the training camp in the USA there were constant dissatisfaction and debates, mainly related to the presence of the players' families.
" There are many things to consider on and off the field of play. Women, family members, everyone was involved. There were many things and I don't understand why families had to be involved from the start ," Mateus declared.
According to him, the problems were not limited to family members, but also included organizing travel and accommodation, creating tensions among the players.
" Then there were discussions about travel, hotel reservations. There was discussion after discussion within the team. It wasn't something that was shown in the media, but there were constant discussions within the team. One player was angry with another because one player's mother was allowed to travel with the team. While another player's wife and children were not allowed. The others had to fly on commercial planes ," he said.
Mateus added that these situations created an inappropriate atmosphere within the team, assessing that the team's focus was not fully on the sporting objective.
" In the end there were a lot of uncomfortable situations that were not made public. But beyond that, the focus was not just on the World Cup. It was family day after family day. They hadn't even been in the US for two weeks and immediately they were with their families. Instead of bringing them for the quarter-finals if the team had achieved something ," the German legend concluded.
