Over 1,000 dead from devastating earthquake in Morocco, Africa Cup of Nations

The match between Morocco and Liberia valid for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers is postponed.

The cause is the earthquake, which hit Morocco causing 1037 dead and 1200 injured, 721 of them in critical condition.

According to Sky, the match scheduled for 21:00 will be played on another day.

The 7-magnitude earthquake struck central Morocco as people took to the streets in Marrakesh and other cities.

The earthquake struck at around 11pm local time at a relatively shallow depth, 71km south-west of Marrakesh, according to the US Geological Survey.

The balance of the earthquake is updated minute by minute, as data comes in from the cities and especially from the mountain resorts near the epicenter. The villages are very poor, often have no internet connection and the houses are built with the characteristic wall made of straw, mud and stones.

The earthquake was felt as far away as Portugal and Algeria, according to the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere and Algeria's Civil Protection agency, which is overseeing the emergency response.

In 2004, at least 628 people were killed and 926 injured when an earthquake struck al-Hoceima in north-eastern Morocco.

In 1980, the magnitude 7.3 El Asnam earthquake in neighboring Algeria killed 2,500 people and left at least 300,000 homeless.
