Former Milan president, the last before the 'Berlusconi' era, passes

Giuseppe Farina, the former president of AC Milan, better known as Giussi, has died at the age of 91. The AC Milan boss held the reins of the club from 1982 to 1986, before handing over to Silvio Berlusconi.

Born in Gambellara, in the province of Vicenza, in 1933, he would have turned 92 in September. During his career as an entrepreneur he managed, in addition to the Rossoneri, Padova and Vicenza, where he achieved a historic second place in Serie A during the 1977-78 season.

The top scorer was Paolo Rossi, the future world champion in 1982; he scored 24 goals. Nicknamed Giussi, during his career he managed 12 teams; Milan, Padova, Vicenza, Audace, Valdagno, Legnago, Schio, Rovigo, Belluno, Rovereto, Modena and Palù.

Farina took over Milan on 19 January 1982 from Gaetano Morazzoni. It was the time of Gigi Radice on the bench and some difficulties. A few days after taking office, Farina replaced Radice with Italo Galbiati. But the Rossoneri finished in 14th place, falling to Serie B for the second time.

In 1982–83, Ilario Castagner arrived, who immediately returned Milan to the top division. Farina resigned as president in 1986, following a deterioration in the financial situation. He was replaced by Rosario Lo Verde, who remained at the helm of the company as regent. On 20 February 1986, Fininvest president Silvio Berlusconi bought the team, paying off the debt of several billion lire and saving the club from bankruptcy. The rest is history.
