Former Brazil footballer Robinho was arrested by Brazilian federal police to serve a nine-year prison sentence for rape after the country's top court of justice authorized his detention in the country following a request by Italian authorities.
In a statement, the police said that the former player of the national team, Milan, City and Real will undergo a medical examination and a hearing before being sent to a cell.
The 40-year-old was sentenced by the Milan court in 2017 after being found guilty of raping a girl of Albanian origin.
9 out of 15 judges of the institution voted in favor of the request of the Italian authorities.
The process started after the request sent by the Italian Ministry of Justice in 2023 based on the fact that Brazil does not allow the extradition of Brazilian citizens to other countries.
Robinho was found guilty of gang-raping a 23-year-old woman on January 22, 2013, while the victim was unconscious.
According to the court, Robinho made the girl drink alcohol until she passed out, and then gang-raped her in the wardrobe of a Milanese club where the girl had gone to celebrate her birthday.
According to the court, the perpetrators of the crime had shown contempt and humiliated the victim.
The 40-year-old Robinho lives in Brazil and has always denied the accusations made.
