
Jon Dahl Tomason, the former Danish striker who moved to Milan, is the new coach of Sweden. A few weeks after leaving Blackburn in the Championship, Tomason accepted the job in charge of the Scandinavian national team, with the aim of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
The 47-year-old coach becomes the first foreigner to lead the Swedish national team and takes the place left vacant by Jean Anderson, who left the job 96 days ago, after failing to qualify for EURO 2024.
" I can't wait to start this wonderful job and meet the fans, players and of course the media in Sweden. Think, talk and dream yellow and blue ", - were his first words posted on the website of the Swedish Football Association.
Tomason, who will take up his post on March 1 and will make his debut as Sweden coach in friendlies against Portugal and Albania. The deal runs beyond the 2026 World Cup and will be automatically renewed in the event of qualification. His deputy will be the Dutchman, Remi Reijniers.
Tomason started his career as a trainer early, after hanging up his "shoes on the nails". His first experience as an assistant coach at Excelsior in the Netherlands, where he became head coach in 2013. After spells at Roda and Vitese, before becoming assistant coach of the Danish national team under coach Age Hareide. In the 2018 World Cup, Denmark reached the 1/16 round.
He then moved to Sweden to manage Malmo, where he won two championships and reached the group stage of the Champions League. In June 2022, he accepted the Blackburn bench in England, a position he left a few days earlier.
