Tajikistan's representation is absolutely the first story of this edition's Asian Cup in Qatar. The team of 57-year-old Croatian coach Petar Shegrat, for whom this is the first appearance in the Asian championship, sensationally passed the group and recently shocked the United Arab Emirates.

He was born in Gjurgjevc, but very early he went to Germany, where he played as an amateur. He started the coaching profession very early and his crazy journey took him from Georgia through Indonesia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Afghanistan and the Maldives to Tajikistan, where he has been coaching since 2022.
Did you get an impression after the victory against the United Arab Emirates, how did the players experience it?
I hope the boys recover from the holiday, I have never experienced anything like it. Attention, there is no alcohol, but they danced until morning. I am very happy for them, they are heroes. What can I tell you... I hope the boys keep their feet on the ground so we can go one step further against Jordan.
They are hungry for victory, they want to stay in the tournament. My boys are heroes. They have never experienced anything like this, from the competition to the conditions we have here and on the field. Maybe they never will. I'm proud of them, it's amazing what they've done.
What are the reactions in Tajikistan?
No one in Tajikistan, even in their madness, expected this. Euphoria swept the whole country. There are four charters that will come for the match with Jordan, all the families of the players are also coming. I promised them they could come if we beat the UAE and I kept my promise. The president of the country contacted me and asked me to convey a message to the players and praise them. He said something to me personally, but I will keep it to myself.

Është histori e gjatë. Pasi u largova nga kombëtarja e Maldiveve, për dy vjet isha pa punë për shkak të virusit korona. Sapo kisha rregulluar gjithçka me një vend arab dhe më pas erdhi korona. Unë isha në shtëpi dhe më pas Federata e Taxhikistanit më kontaktoi me rekomandimin e një prej bashkëpunëtorëve të mi. Më donin shumë, por nuk donin asistentët e mi. Unë refuzova, më ofruan një rrogë më të madhe, por u thashë se nuk mund të punoja pa njerëzit e mi. Kur u futa në kombëtare, federata më hapi krahët, edhe pse në fillim nuk ishte dakord me mua. E nisa nga e para. Më paraqitën një listë të domosdoshme dhe kaq. Nuk doja të punoja kështu dhe shpejt pashë që në kombëtaret e moshave kishte lojtarë cilësorë për ekipin e parë. Më thanë se fillimisht ata duhet të kalonin të gjitha kategoritë e të rinjve, por unë i tërhoqa direkt në kombëtaren A. Sot ata janë liderët e ekipit. Shumica e lojtarëve luajnë në ligën e Taxhikistanit dhe në vendet përreth. Klubi Istiklol bëri një gjë shumë të mirë, sepse bleu shumë lojtarë të kombëtares, kështu që ata luajnë së bashku gjithë sezonin. Janë dhjetë prej tyre atje, shtatë janë nga klube të tjera taxhikistanase dhe pjesa tjetër nga rajoni. Unë solla një portier nga një ligë e Singaporit. A young man in the team is called Albert, so we joke that we have Albert Einstein. I told him to buy me glasses like Einstein's, so that I would look exactly like him. And he found them for me!
Do you have offers from other federations or maybe clubs? You know what?
Right now, I'm not interested in that at all. I have a contract until February 10, but the only thing I'm thinking about is this national team. Interested, I have received many gifts here in Qatar. It's good to see that you're interesting, but there will be time for that. Now only Tajikistan, only one game with Jordan. Some agents have already started asking about my players. They offer all kinds of things and it disturbs the peace of the players a bit. I told them that I would send home whoever deals with them. We are a family, but there needs to be a little hand and strong discipline. There will be time later for all those stories.
