The Bielefeld State Court has handed down severe sentences to the family of murdered boxer Besar Nimani.
His brother, Berat, was sentenced to life in prison for attempted murder and aggravated assault, while his sister received five years in prison. According to the court, Berat shot at the family members of the person who killed his brother, showing “deep contempt”, which was also evident in letters he had sent from prison.
The sentences exceeded the prosecutor's request, which had proposed 12 years in prison for Berati. The atmosphere in the courtroom was tense, with the defendants' families reacting with tears and cries.
For years, there had been a conflict between two families, one Albanian and one Kurdish, over alleged drug dealing. The events culminated in March 2024, when boxer Besar Nimani was murdered in Bielefeld.
According to witness reports, a group of five to six people were sitting together in a bar. They then reportedly left the restaurant together. Then suddenly there was gunfire outside the restaurant. Six to eight shots were reportedly fired in the incident.
The 38-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical team. The perpetrators of this murder have not been identified by German authorities, while a similar attack against him had also occurred in 2013.
The final hearing was postponed several times due to defense motions, which were rejected by the court after lengthy discussions.
Nimani, originally from Mitrovica, Kosovo, moved to Bielefeld in 1997. He has fought 27 professional boxing matches, losing only one. During his career, he also won a European middleweight title.
