It has been almost two years since the continent's top clubs failed to launch the Super League, a tournament made up of permanent members that aimed to raise far more revenue than that guaranteed by UEFA.
But as of April 2021, the situation has evolved, with UEFA deciding to revolutionize the Champions League format. According to what was revealed by the Spanish El Pais, UEFA itself in cooperation with the European Club Association is working on the idea of its Super League with 3 series of 18 teams each, thus putting an end to European cups, including the Champions League.
The new competitions will be called SuperLeague, Lega Europa and Lega Aspirante, with teams being relegated and promoted. These competitions are thought to start from the end of the 2024 season which coincides with the end period of the broadcast rights already sold.
There is talk that winning the title, or a good position in the national leagues could be worth a cash bonus and possibly more points in the Super League standings. One of the important points is the days of the matches. The weekend can be reserved for European competitions, while midweek for national championships. The project is on the table. It remains to be understood how the pieces of the "puzzle" will fit together.
