An unexpected incident has hit Xherdan Shaqiri's Basel club, after a massive fire broke out in the locker room at the "St. Jakob-Park" stadium. The incident led to the postponement of the match against FC Thun, valid for the Swiss championship.
According to an official statement from the club, the flames caused significant damage inside the stadium, completely destroying the locker room area. It is reported that the players' facilities, as well as the storage areas for sports equipment, were severely damaged.
The fire has not only spread to this area. It has also affected several other functional spaces, including administrative offices, including the team manager's office, as well as physiotherapy areas, showers and toilets.
The club announced that sports equipment, such as shoes and jerseys used for matches and training, was also significantly damaged. Medical and technical equipment was also affected, which may be difficult to replace in the short term.
The Swiss Football Association has agreed to postpone the match between Basel and FC Thun. The club has announced that any further developments will be communicated in the coming days.
