Spanish police have seized 40 tons of cocaine from a ship in the Atlantic Ocean. The operation took place in international waters near the Canary Islands.

The amount seized is considered one of the largest ever recorded in this type of operation. Around 20 people were arrested during the operation.

The ship had departed from Freetown in Sierra Leone and was bound for Benghazi in Libya. Preliminary investigations suggest that the drugs were intended to be transferred to smaller vessels for distribution to various countries in Europe.

The vessel is currently in the Canary Islands, where detailed checks are being carried out.

Spain's geographical position and its links to producing regions make it an important entry point for drug trafficking to the European market. In recent years, authorities have recorded several large-scale operations, including the seizure of 13 tons in the port of Algeciras in 2024 and another case in January with nearly 10 tons seized at sea.

The latest operation is expected to be part of broader investigations into international trafficking networks.
