Today, February 9th, the final phase of the trial against the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) begins in The Hague.

At the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi will speak before the black platoons regarding charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the period 1998-1999.

At the beginning of today's trial in The Hague, special prosecutor Kimberly West spoke, requesting a total of 45 years in prison for the former KLA leaders.

"The Specialized Prosecutor's Office is seeking a conviction for all counts of the indictment and a single sentence of 45 years, based on the individual contributions of the crimes committed by each of the individuals, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi. These are war crimes and crimes against humanity, they are serious and these charges have not lost their value with the passage of time," she said.

According to her, the victims were Serbs, Roma, but also Albanians, who were perceived as enemies. The special prosecutor was harsh on the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army. She mentioned several cases, saying that they had a “common criminal intent”. She also said that the individual crimes of the individuals on trial “have caused a lot of pain to the relatives of the victims”.

The prosecutor has alleged that 100 people were killed and hundreds more were abused, in and around 50-plus detention camps of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).

"This case is about the goal of the four defendants to gain and exercise control over all of Kosovo. This determination for competence and power was met with something, and this had to do with people who had come out as opponents or were determined to be collaborators with Serbian forces, or Serbian officials, or who did not support the goals of the KLA," she said.

According to her, it often included people associated with the Democratic League of Kosovo, Roma and Serb people.
