Deadline until June 26, will Beleri "reconcile" with Rama? Strasbourg

The Albanian government and Fredi Beleri, the former mayor of Himara and now a Greek MEP, have until June 26 to reach an agreement between them.

This is the decision from Strasbourg, where the European Court of Human Rights has left it up to the parties to find an out-of-court solution.

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled positively on Fredis Beleri's request for a review of the irregularities found during his arrest and detention two days before the municipal elections in Himara.

The ECHR sets June 26 as the deadline for ND MEP Fredis Beleri and the Albanian government to reach an out-of-court settlement. If no agreement is reached, both parties will be invited to present their arguments before the Court.

It is worth noting that at the preliminary ruling stage of the European Court of Human Rights, the overwhelming percentage of similar requests are rejected.

EPP MEP Fredis Beleri said that "the preliminary ruling of the European Court of Human Rights, on my complaint against illegal detention, two days before the municipal elections in Himara, is considered valid in principle, it is a first exoneration, but at the same time a major exoneration."

"Despite the will of the Greek ethnic minority, finally, for those who continue to fight for the rule of law and institutions in Albania's accession, I thank my lawyer, Professor Nikos Alivizato, who with his team handled the case today, to regain what we won democratically," said Beleri.

Fredi Beleri was arrested two days before the 2023 local elections, while previously he had become a target of accusations by Prime Minister Edi Rama. Beleri was arrested on charges of vote buying, while he was sentenced to two years in prison by a decision of the GJKKO.

Beleri's arrest caused a clash between Tirana and Athens, while the Greek Government described it as a 'political ban' imposed on him. Despite being in prison, Beleri managed to win the elections in Himara, but without being able to exercise the function of mayor for a single day.
