The former Prime Minister of Lithuania Gendiminas Kirkilas has passed away at the age of 72. He was found dead in his home, with no signs of violence, according to Lithuanian media reports citing information from the police.
The Prime Minister of Lithuania Ingrida Simonite paid tribute to Kirkilas, underlining that he was a "powerful figure" who was actively involved in the country's political life.
Born in Vilnius in 1951, Gediminas Kirkilas served as Lithuania's Minister of Defense from 2004 to 2006 and for the next two years (2006-2008) he was the head of the Social Democratic government.
