The United States is ready to act against Chinese companies supporting Russia's war against Ukraine, a senior US official told reporters. He said that this is one of the issues that the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, will address with the Chinese leadership during his visit to Beijing next week.
US officials have reacted sharply to what they describe as China's assistance in supplying Russian military machinery after the Kremlin's difficulties in invading Ukraine. American officials have expressed that continued support for Russia poses a major risk to stable relations between Washington and Beijing.
Briefing reporters ahead of Mr Blinken's planned visit to Shanghai and Beijing from April 24 to 26, the senior State Department official said US-China relations had improved compared to a year ago, when ties marked a historic low, after the United States shot down a Chinese balloon suspected of espionage.
But improving relations does not mean the United States sacrifices its capacity to strengthen alliances and protect its interests, the official said.
"We are prepared to take the necessary steps against firms that ... seriously undermine security both in Ukraine and in Europe," the official said when asked how Washington would go about persuading Beijing to halt aid to Russia's military machinery. .
"We have shown the willingness to do this in relation to companies of several countries, not only Chinese," the official said, noting that Russia had strengthened its weapons production capacity with China's help. "We will express our intention for China to limit that support," the official said.
Mr. Blinken's visit to China will be the first since June, when the United States was trying to renew high-level engagements that Beijing began to curtail after a 2022 trip to Taiwan by Democratic lawmaker Nancy Pelosi. who at that time was the speaker of the House of Representatives. China claims the democratically governed island as part of its territory. / VOA
