The House of Representatives in the American Congress has approved the aid package of 60.8 billion dollars for Ukraine.
Democrats and Republicans have come together, after months of deadlock, over renewed American support to help Ukraine fend off a Russian invasion. The final score was 311-112.
This marks a pivotal moment for Ukraine, which is in desperate need of military aid as it struggles to fight back against Russia's invasion.
Immediately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted on social networks, expressing gratitude for the decision that, as he described, "keeps history on the right side."
"I am grateful to the United States House of Representatives, to both parties, and to Speaker Mike Johnson personally for the decision that keeps history on track.
Democracy and freedom will always be of global importance and will never fail as long as America helps protect it.
The vital US aid bill passed by the House today will prevent the war from expanding, save thousands upon thousands of lives, and help both of our nations become stronger.
Only peace and security can be achieved only by force. We hope the bills are supported in the Senate and sent to President Biden's desk. Thank you, America!" Zelensky wrote.
Supporters started waving Ukrainian flags, cheering and clapping even before the result was officially announced, when it became clear that the aid package for Ukraine had been approved. Such a scene is not common for the House of Representatives, but this is a vote that has been stalled for months.
But Donald Trump's ally Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican representative, said that "officials have been too fixated on voting for other countries' wars and the war industry."
"We have sold America today. We had members of Congress there flying the Ukrainian flag in the United States House of Representatives while doing nothing to secure our border. I think every American will be outraged," she said.
It's been six months since President Biden first asked Congress for approval of a new aid package for Ukraine.
Since then, very little American aid has reached the front lines of the war. This has been a useful boost for President Putin's forces, who are now on the offensive in Ukraine.
Polls show that in America, as well as in Europe, public support for continuing to help Ukrainians with money and weapons has declined, although it remains above 50% in most countries.
Diminishing Western support is exactly what Putin is betting on.
According to the Kremlin leader's calculations, over time, Russia may exceed the resources and morale available to both Ukraine and its partners.
Supporters of Ukraine in Washington hope today's vote in Congress will remind people of the critical need to continue supporting Kiev.
The package is now expected to pass the US Senate, where it will likely be approved on Tuesday. President Biden then promised to sign it immediately. / Pamphlet
