The criminal amnesty, from which hundreds of prisoners will benefit from freedom or reduced sentences, is expected to close next week in the Laws Commission and then it will pass to the Assembly.
In order to reach the minimum number of votes in the 84th Assembly, some of the proposals made by the opposition have the green light from the Minister of Justice, and the amnesty is expected to be available for violent protesters in the DP protests from October 1, 2018 to December 31, 2020, which have been convicted or are still in the trial process.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice, Ismail Shehu, in the show "Confrontation" on Report TV gave details of the numbers of those who benefit.
There are 4 categories that benefit
Category I - All those who have been sentenced to a maximum of 3 years in prison for men and 4 years in prison for women
Category II - All men who have 3 years left of their sentence and women who have 4 years left in prison. So you can be sentenced to 9 or 10 years, but you have 3 and 4 years left.
Category III- Men who are equal to 60 years old at the time of the entry into force of the law or over 60 years old or women 50 years old or over 50 years old automatically benefit
Category IV - Children who were equal to or under 18 years of age at the time of the execution of the sentence
In addition to the defined categories of amnesty beneficiaries, which include a wide range of offenses that are considered light, the beneficiaries will also be beneficiaries of one and a half years if they are women and children and 1 year if they are men. For this, the strategy of the principles of humanism has been followed.
Categories such as those sentenced to life imprisonment, fugitives, murderers in qualifying circumstances and all subjects convicted by the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime cannot benefit from the criminal amnesty.
