The executive director of the Basel Action Network Jim Pocket from Durrës has spoken about the ship with 102 containers of toxic waste.
Pocket stated that the ship is being held 1 km away from the coast and is expected to dock at the port this afternoon, while calling for the opening of the containers to be done under strict supervision and in the public eye.
He said that he is 90% sure that the waste is toxic.
" We are here on the occasion of the arrival of the toxic waste ship with 102 containers. We expect the ship Moliva to arrive behind our flanks and anchor in the afternoon. It was supposed to come this morning at 8 o'clock, but has been asked by the authorities to be kept one km away from the coast. We have information that we have requested the captain to come and stand by.
I believe this delay is because you are all here. We believe it will anchor in the afternoon, but we are not sure what will happen next. We are aware that there is a criminal proceeding by the Prosecutor's Office on this matter and we hope that the prosecutors will be here when the ship arrives.
We hope that the opening of the containers will be done under strict supervision and in transparency with the public.
There has been a lot of controversy about this shipment. Some say there is no toxic waste, but we are 90% sure there is toxic waste. We await a full analysis by the competent bodies.
I am 100% sure that this shipment should not have been transported to Thailand. We went to the factory in Thailand and saw it there. We did our own testing and found dangerous toxic residues, arsenic and lead.
We believe that it originates from the steel company located in Elbasan, therefore all the necessary observations have been made", said Pocket.
