Fatos Nano's former bodyguard, Viktor Agolli, spoke yesterday about the 1998 coup d'état, where the opposition at the time attacked the Prime Minister's Office building. In a show, he stated that Fatos Nano escaped from the building and took refuge in Macedonia, while declaring that the last one to leave was Edi Rama. However, Arben Malaj, a former minister in Nano's government who was inside that building on September 14, 1998, responded to him. He has confessed what, according to him, is the truth of what happened inside the Prime Minister's Office.
The bodyguards of every politician or head of constitutional institutions deserve recognition. Their problem is the deformation of history after a few years, to adapt to advantageous circumstances. Not even Tori has escaped this "disease". Here's why:
1. Fatos Nano did not want to leave the building. There were several ministers who insisted, as the murderous hatred of the PD insurgents was directed at Nano. After he left, where does the moral and legal responsibility of the Guard remain?
2. The Prime Minister and the government had made it clear that the defense of the Prime Minister's Office would be done without provoking and hitting the protesters — 100 percent different from what happened on January 21.
3. Armed protesters attacked the Prime Minister's Office, injuring the Guard commander, Licaj.
4. The Republican Guard fell, but more importantly, that protest did not turn into a bloody clash.
5. Protesters entered the Prime Minister's Office and were hitting like crazy.
6. There were only 3-4 ministers left and we were protecting ourselves from bullets, leaning against the supporting columns two floors above.
7. When we lost hope and mortal danger was approaching us, bullets were surrounding us on every side.
8. It was said that Berisha had received warning and threatening phone calls to resign from the Prime Minister's office. It was precisely those phone calls from Washington that Berisha immediately obeyed.
8. After failing to occupy the prime minister's office, the protesters stormed the Guardia, where they hijacked a tank.
10. The Democratic Party became the first party in Europe after the 90s to hold a battle tank in front of its headquarters.
9. Who fled the prime minister's office building first or last doesn't really matter, but only the last four of us who fortunately escaped death know the truth.
10. Tori's claim that Rama was the last to leave is untrue and insincere.
10.1. Because Tori left faster than the others, to accompany the Prime Minister. So he is not an eyewitness.
10.2. The Guard, I believe at that time, did not have drones to follow developments inside the Prime Minister's Office in real time.
10.3. Tori, perhaps unknowingly, but perhaps without any beneficial intent, is misleading public opinion, as he has not been an eyewitness to recent developments in the Prime Minister's office.
This clarification is not about Tori, but about historical truths, which not even Tori himself can distort.
