This decision by the Files Authority sheds light on the history of one of the most well-known names in Albanian journalism and confirms his innocence of false accusations that have affected his life and career for decades.
The Files Authority has issued Decision No. 264, dated May 22, 2025, regarding the status of the renowned journalist and opinion leader Frrok Çupi.
After detailed research in archival documents and according to the standard research protocol, the Authority has concluded that Frrok Çupi does not appear to have been a collaborator or favored by the former State Security. On the contrary, it clearly results from the official documentation that he was persecuted by the former State Security, especially during the period of early 1991, when he was the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Rilindja Demokratike”.
File No. 56 of 1991, consisting of 11 pages, contains evidence that proves this persecution. This once again confirms Mr. Çupi's passion and courage in a difficult period of Albanian transition.

Frrok Çupi himself requested this verification by submitting two requests: whether he was persecuted by the former Sigurimi and whether there was any evidence of collaboration or favoritism by this institution. In response, the Files Authority gave a positive answer only about persecution and denied any connection to collaboration.
In an interview with the media, Mr. Çupi expressed the personal reasons that prompted him to request this official verification:
"I was faced with monstrous slanders, which started from Sali Berisha himself in April 1996. The Constitutional Court overturned those slanders with a special decision, even though Berisha's close friend, Rustem Gjata, was at the head of the Court.
After him, the slanders were spread by other elements that feed only on this type of propaganda.
I would never ask for documents just to confront the slanders, because for me what matters is my truth, who I am.
But I did this for my friends, colleagues and family, with whom I want to share a common truth, which is best clarified through the law and institutions.
I feel good to be in the climate of the law and my truth.”
This decision by the Files Authority sheds light on the history of one of the most well-known names in Albanian journalism and confirms his innocence of false accusations that have affected his life and career for decades.
