The Ombudsman, Endrit Shabani, inspected the Tirana Nursing Home today, where he was closely acquainted with the living conditions of pensioners and the problems faced by this sector.
After the inspection, Shabani proposed that the assets confiscated by SPAK be made available to social services, turning them into care homes for the elderly.
According to publicly available data, Albania currently has only 6 public residential centers for the elderly, with a capacity of 330 places, while over 60,000 elderly people live alone. In this context, the needs for housing and care are greater than the existing capacities.

"This year alone, SPAK has confiscated 2 million euros in assets from crime and corruption. Public institutions can put these properties and assets at the service of the elderly," declared Shabani.
According to him, the state owns 63 buildings confiscated from crime, including hotels, villas and apartments, which could be adapted for social services.

During the inspection, the Ombudsman also found a shortage of medical and nursing staff, as well as a lack of specialized facilities for the treatment of elderly people with serious health problems.

The issue of care for the elderly remains a social challenge, especially in conditions where demands for housing and care are higher than current public capacities.
