James Broadnax and Tiana Krasniqi

Tiana Krasniqi has opened her heart and shared her most painful experience: her last moments with her husband, James Broadnax, who was executed by death row in the state of Texas after being found guilty of murdering two people during a robbery in 2008.

Tiana says that until his last breath, James insisted on his innocence and prayed for his voice to be heard. She recounts in detail the last meeting, the tears, the fear and the pain of the moment when she saw him tied to the execution bed.

"I'm not ready to die. I didn't do this crime," Tiana recalls telling James during their final hours together. From 8:00 a.m. until noon, they stood next to each other, through tears and the last hope that the execution might be stopped.

But in the afternoon, the news came that everything was over. "At 5:30 p.m. I entered the room where I saw him lying on the execution bed, tied with belts. It was the saddest moment of my life," she recounts.

In the interview for RTSH, Tiana also reveals her husband's last words: "Don't give up. Tell the whole world that I didn't commit this crime ," while admitting that even weeks after the execution, the pain remains unbearable.

For the first time, Tiana also speaks about the shocking moment when she touched James's lifeless body and the silence of the victims' families, to whom he apologized moments before his death.

Excerpt from the interview:

Semiljana Azizi: At the moment when the court decided to execute the death sentence for your husband, were you present?

Tiana Krasniqi: Yes, I was there.

Semiljana Azizi: How was that day, the procedure, the last meeting with James, the last goodbye with him?

Tiana Krasniqi: From 8:00 in the morning until 12:00. We had our last conversations. He cried a lot, I cried a lot. He did not accept that his life should be stopped. “I am not ready to die. I did not commit this crime,” he said repeatedly. It was very difficult to see a 37-year-old man cry and say that he was afraid. Then from 14:00 to 17:00 we waited for some news about the stay of the execution. At 16:00 they told me that they would not stop it. At 17:30 I entered the room where I saw him lying on the execution bed, tied with belts. It was the saddest moment of my life. We both cried, we talked until our last breath. He apologized to the victims' families, but again said that he did not commit that crime.

Semiljana Azizi: You and James met physically for the first time at the moment he was lifeless. How do you remember that moment?

Tiana Krasniqi: The first time you touched someone after death… it's not easy. It was the first and last time you touched a lifeless body. I have no words to describe it. It's hard. Especially when you know that person loved and respected you more than anyone else in the world.

Semiljana Azizi: Were the families of the people who died in the 2008 robbery able to forgive James when he apologized to them in his final moments?

Tiana Krasniqi: No, they didn't speak at all. Only James spoke to them. I was there until the poison entered his body. He screamed in pain, lost consciousness and after 20 minutes died. I had to watch him there for 20 minutes, holding his breath.

Semiljana Azizi: What were your and James' last words?

Tiana Krasniqi: He told me: “Don't give up. Don't give up. I love you so much. Don't give up. Tell the whole world that I didn't commit this crime.” To this day, even after three weeks, I still don't have it easy.
