According to the Institute of Statistics, UNESCO cities such as Berati and Gjirokastra are disappearing due to rapid population decline.
Compared to the previous year, Gjirokastra had the strongest demographic decline in 2022 with 3.5% or almost 4000 people less. The 2,000-year-old city of Berat is ranked second, followed by Dibra and Lezha.
"The emptying of these cities will make them turn into ruins. All those houses that Berat has, e.g. if they are not inhabited by people, if they have a defect and there is no one to identify and fix it, then the whole building will collapse and no one will remember them. One example after another, the whole city will fall. For me, people are the greatest value, they are the most important mineral that must be kept and preserved. This mineral favors all other values. Otherwise we are lost", said sociologist Zyhdi Dervishi.
"In these cities, in the years from 1945-1990, industrial facilities were built where the residents of the cities were employed, even coming from other cities. The Textile Factory was established in Berat where 7000-8000 people worked. In Gjirokastër there were workshops for handicrafts, in Krujë a large artistic enterprise was established that worked for export. These cities urgently need investments where the city population will be employed with decent wages. We must entice Albanians with economic development to stay in their country", added the sociologist.
"Taiwan, for example, although it was not a communist country, works with 6-year plans. When I looked at those plans in detail, our former 5-year plans looked like tin toys. Therefore, short- and medium-term visionary plans are urgently needed. In these cities, the wealth of the world, if the Albanians leave, foreigners will come and as a result they will lose the Albanian identity", suggested the sociologist.
