" Ambassadors and embassies in Albania, members of the World Media Freedom Coalition, as well as representatives of the United Nations, OSCE and the European Union met to mark the World Press Freedom Day, to reaffirm our commitment to the freedom of press and freedom of expression.
We reiterated our support for Albania to continue to develop a media environment where professional and ethical journalists can investigate and report objectively, without fear or intimidation. An independent media is essential for a functioning democracy. We emphasized the importance of journalists reporting professionally and maintaining standards of conduct, including avoiding personal, political or financial interests. We encourage the Albanian media to promote inclusive representations and avoid discrimination and prejudice. We embrace the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in confronting the global environmental crisis.
We discussed concerns about recent reports of attacks and abuse of journalists, including gender-based discrimination, and reiterated our commitment to speaking out when this happens. Attacks on journalists or the free press can never be justified.
As we mark World Press Freedom Day, we applaud the bravery of journalists in reporting the truth while enabling citizens to receive accurate information. We call on politicians, law enforcement authorities, business to ensure that journalists can freely carry out this vital duty. "- said in response.
