The center of Tirana has become the scene of two different protests this Monday, with separate causes, but taking place in parallel at the same time. On one side are opponents of the tourist resort in Zvërnec, while on the other activists and representatives of the opposition are protesting against the provision of hormonal therapy for transgender people at the QSUT.
Activists from the "Pro-Family Coalition", representatives of civil society and exponents of the Democratic Party have gathered in Skanderbeg Square, opposing the Ministry of Health's decision to offer hormonal therapy to transgender people in the public healthcare system.
Protesters hold banners in support of the traditional family and demand the cancellation of the directive that provides for the provision of hormonal treatments at the “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Center. Organizers have announced that after speeches at Skanderbeg Square, the march will continue towards the Ministry of Health.
The debate has been heated after the decision to provide hormone therapy for transgender people in the public system for the first time in Albania. According to the directive, the treatment will be accessible to people undergoing the gender transition process, under medical supervision and according to criteria set by health authorities.
Opponents of the decision argue that the healthcare system faces more urgent problems, citing the lack of medicines, difficulties in treating patients with serious illnesses, and the problems identified over the years at the QSUT.
At the same time, a second protest is taking place in the center of Tirana against the tourist resort project in Zvërnec. Environmental activists and citizens oppose the planned investment in the coastal area of Vlora, raising concerns about the environmental impact and transparency of the project.
