The month of January started with a significant increase in accidents, where according to INSTAT, 162 road accidents are counted.
Compared to the same month of the previous year, accidents have doubled. In 84.0% of cases, they occurred as a result of the driver's behavior, mainly in the 25-34 age group.
Road expert Fatmir Hasho says that the main problem is the use of mobile phones while driving.
"The problem lies in the use of mobile phones. It has increased in a frightening way, we can encounter it on the roads, especially at high speeds. If you notice an abnormal gait, you will see that the driver is using a cell phone. I see it as a very big problem", said Hasho.
For the show 'Today Live in Albania' on Report TV, the expert says that the solution is not a fine, but the removal of the driver's license.
"The fine is not a solution, the removal of the driving license is a measure that affects the driver. If it is removed along with the points, it will be very difficult to get the driver's license back ," continues Hasho.
Hasho says that another problem why young drivers become a source of accidents is that, according to him, they don't know how to read traffic signs.
"Today we are between the ages of 25-30 years old. One of the reasons it goes off the road is that they don't respect the sign, they don't know how to read the signs. They don't read the signs", said the expert.
Hasho welcomes the initiative to fine pedestrians, that according to the INSTAT report, in 16.0% of cases, accidents occurred as a result of pedestrian behavior.
"It reached a point where people are no longer asking where they are going. This initiative must continue, there must be forgiveness the first time. There should be some flexibility, but the young people who cross the road in the middle without a second thought will be fined, even double" , said Hasho.
