"Not a "Guantanamo" in Albania ( Pas de "Guantanamo" en Albanie )", is the title of the comment of the editor-in-chief of the Albanian-language Swiss newspaper Le Canton27.ch Nefail Maliqi, who analyzes for the Tribune de Genéve the recent agreement between Tirana- Rome, between Rama and Meloni on the installation of 40 thousand African immigrants in Albania.

What do the international organizations in Geneva and those in Brussels say about this "turbid" agreement and what do the Italians and Albanians say as well as the leader of the Albanian opposition, this agreement which will not pass without consequences (the installation of 40 thousand Africans in the country of Albanians) at a time when the Albanians themselves are fleeing from the perspective, from this smallest and poorest country in Europe

Article by Nefail Maliq:

The agreement of November 7, 2023 signed in Rome by the Albanian prime minister and his Italian counterpart surprised everyone, inciting anger especially among Albanians and Italians. A series of controversies marked the debates and the media in these two countries, including in the Swiss and European media. This agreement between Edi Rama and Giorgia Meloni was received with reservations by European and international organizations, such as within the EU, the UN and UNHCR. Based on this agreement, Albania will receive about 40,000 refugees from Africa in two camps set up in Shengjin and Gjadër. Not only in Albania, but also in Italy, political circles and the media have expressed serious doubts about this project. According to them, the agreement is "illegal at the national and international level, ineffective and encourages illegal immigration".

"These refugee camps will turn Albania into a no man's land, while millions will be paid for Edi Rama and Giorgia Meloni".  The chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has stated for the Swiss newspaper "lecanton27.ch" that " this harmful and unacceptable agreement contradicts the Albanian Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights, as well as the decisions of the International Court of Justice." Yesterday, during the time of fascism and during the war, Albania was occupied by the Italians. Today, Giorgia Meloni wants to peacefully "reconquer" Albania with African immigrants. The establishment of refugee camps on the territory of Albania risks the amplification of human trafficking and the slave trade, already problematic in the land of eagles, within which reactions that can be described as "racist" may occur. In reality, it is not a question of racism if Albanians protest against the arrival of Africans: if we have to talk about racism, this offense should burden Italy, which instead of keeping the refugees in its country, "hands them over" to Albania ?!

How can we send immigrants to a country that is itself poor, characterized by unemployment and a mass exodus, as is happening today in Albania? Italy considers Albania as a bridge and uses it as a camp.

In the last two decades alone, more than 1,400,000 citizens, mostly young people, have left Albania. Specifically, a kind of European Guantanamo is being created, outside of any international standards, outside of the EU, without being able to verify the condition of the people locked up in these centers. These immigrants expelled from Italy against their will will not be able to be kept in "prison".

In point 5 of the agreement it is further stated that "the competent authorities of the Italian side are exempt from monetary restrictions or controls and can freely transfer currencies, regardless of the provisions in force in the Republic of Albania". Edi Rama thus paved the way for money laundering, drug trafficking and other types of trafficking. These refugee camps will turn Albania into a no man's land, while millions will be paid for Edi Rama and Giorgia Meloni.
