The Special Court has set March 9 as the date for the start of the trial on the merits of the criminal case against Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj. The hearing will take place at 09:30.
The panel is headed by Judge Engjëllushe Tahiri, with members Alma Kodraliu and Rudina Palloj.
The court made the decision to transfer the file to trial on February 9, including Erion Veliaj, his wife Ajola Xoxa and 28 other people, individuals and legal entities, in the process. Veliaj has been in prison custody since February 10, 2025. The Special Prosecution filed the request for trial five months ago.
The prosecution charges Veliaj with 13 criminal offenses, including passive corruption, money laundering, failure to declare assets, abuse of office and introducing prohibited items into prisons. According to the indictment, he committed passive corruption in 9 cases in relation to companies that received construction permits and public funds from the Municipality of Tirana, while in return they offered benefits in cash and real estate.
Ajola Xoxa is accused of passive corruption in 9 cases related to commercial entities and non-profit organizations. She also faces charges of money laundering, failure to declare assets and concealment of income.
In the same case, several businessmen are accused of active corruption against high-ranking state officials or local elected officials, as well as of concealing income and money laundering.
Former MP Klotilda Bushka is accused of actions aimed at obstructing the discovery of the truth. Durrës prison guard Fatjon Baci is accused of introducing or keeping prohibited items in the institution for the execution of prison sentences, after having given Veliaj a phone call during his transfer from the cell to the court on two occasions.
The court will review the evidence and claims of the parties during the proceedings.
