Anamali, in a heroic gesture, intervened to save two Israeli tourists whose lives were in danger due to strong currents in the lake.
"The Jerusalem Post" in an article about this event writes that Anamali, captain of a tourist boat operating from the northern city of Shkodra, had gone out on the lake with a group of tourists, including seven Israeli citizens.
“ The lifeless body of Albanian citizen Arben Anamali was found in Lake Shkodra on Thursday morning, after he went missing during the rescue of two Israeli tourists due to the lake’s currents earlier this week, according to local media.
Anamali, the captain of a tourist boat operating from the northern city of Shkodra in Albania, took a group of tourists to Lake Shkodra earlier this week, including seven Israeli citizens. Ignoring his warnings about strong currents, two of the Israelis jumped into the water, but faced the risk of drowning.
Life jackets, including Anamal's, were thrown to both of them, but to no avail.
In an attempt to bring them closer to the boat, Anamali jumped into the water himself. He managed to help the Israelites return to the ship before disappearing under the water.
After almost 48 hours of searching, Anamal's body was found.
It is believed that Anamali suffered a cardiac arrest as a result of physical exhaustion and extreme efforts after the rescue. His body was transferred to the Shkodra Regional Hospital for further examinations.
Anamali leaves behind two children.
'Martyr of the Nation'
Anamali was posthumously honored by the Albanian government as a "Martyr of the Nation," one of Albania's highest honors for those who lose their lives during acts of bravery.
"A formal memorial ceremony is expected to be held in the coming days ," the article states.
