Hundreds of hectares of land have been flooded by heavy rainfall, negating the hard work of farmers, mostly in the north.
Agricultural lands, mainly in the Kurbin area in Mamurras, have been damaged by the large flows of the Drojë River, putting crops at risk.
Also, in Hamallaj, Durrës, the situation appears problematic, where the area of agricultural land that is under water reaches 270 ha.
Floods threaten crops, and experts warn that if the rains continue and the water remains at high levels for more than four days, the land could remain barren for a year.
Ilir Kristo, dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, says: "If the weather does not clear for a 5-day period, those lands cannot be replanted."
Grain farmers will suffer the greatest loss, as rainfall risks wiping out wheat fields.
"The entry of water blocks the air, this is the damage that the flood does. For this period we have now, the main plant that is at risk is wheat. The prolonged presence of water in the soil, if it lasts for a few days, then becomes a total destroyer of the root system of the seeds. Asphyxiation," says Kristo.
Damage is considered less for farmers who have invested in greenhouses, which this season are nearing the end of the plant's life cycle, while farmers who have planted trees are luckier, as they are resistant to water.
"Flooding in greenhouses damages the plant if it is in the first phase. Production in greenhouses, for the most part, can be at the end of the season, since the crops that are planted in greenhouses are tomatoes and cucumbers. Generally, floods in our country do not coincide with critical phases of fruit growing," adds Kristo.
The consequences of the rain are causing losses for farmers not only for this season, but there is also a risk of less production in the coming year. Farmers must find another livelihood alternative, because flooded lands and stables will not only not bring production, but also mark a negative balance of the entire annual investment that has been made on the farm.
