The heavy rainfall in Kukës, in addition to occasional interruptions in the electricity supply, has once again shown the poor condition of the road infrastructure in remote mountainous areas.
In the village of Kolesjan, in the Palush neighborhood, a landslide caused by water flows blocked the approximately 2-kilometer segment that connects the neighborhood to the Kukës-Bicaj-Kolesjan-Bushticë national road.
The Roads Directorate of the Municipality of Kukës has intervened to open the road to traffic. Faik Palushi, mayor of the neighborhood, says that the situation repeats itself every time it rains heavily. According to him, the road that serves 24 families has been in a very dilapidated condition for years and the residents have been promised by the municipality that it will be rebuilt.
The Rural Roads Directorate also confirms that the rainfall of recent days created problems on several road segments.
Bilbil Shahu, the director of Rural Roads, reports that teams have intervened immediately at every point where blockages have been reported. He also says that, despite the damage to infrastructure, no cases of flooding or water penetration into homes and isolation of residents have been recorded.
The most problematic situation has occurred in Zapod and the Koloshi road segments, where heavy vehicles have been forced to intervene twice to guarantee traffic.
Although the situation has stabilized, residents of remote rural areas say that any period of rainfall turns traffic into a challenge, indicating the urgent need for sustainable investment in village connecting roads that remain vital for residents of high mountain areas.
